Avinash Shrestha

Kathmandu: a few sketches

1

Nowhere else
have I seen darkness
and light so close,
face to face,
tugging at each other

but, here it seems
the leopard of consciousness
hesitates to spring with impudence
upon anarchism's golden deer.

2

Dreams and eyes so far
wakefulness and sleep
so close,
and clenched fists
deceiving without fear
those innocent hands spread towards the sky
looking for help
here
in the same place this is what I see
under the half-awake
continuously looking Swayamhu eyes

3

Nowhere but here
have I seen smiles and lips
so distant
formalities and smiles
and close as kin
Here
where the Bagmati and Rani Pokhari
never meet

4

Disbelief and belief
ready to fight like two bulls in tehsame meadow
Intellectuality and uselessness
jeering and clapping hands at teh same time
Yes, I saw, my lord, Bhimsen Tower
from whose base, longer than life,
the long night has spread
